Why Volunteering in Conservation and Animal Welfare in Tanzania Matters
Tanzania’s incredible biodiversity is under threat from habitat destruction, climate change, and limited resources for animal welfare. Volunteers play a vital role in protecting and conserving natural habitats, and supporting community initiatives for sustainable practices. They also play a vital role in assisting in animal welfare at shelters.
“Really a very good experience and an excellent way to discover Tanzania. With Bertrand we chose to do 4 weeks of volunteering in Tanzania to celebrate our recent retirement. This allowed us to meet many wonderful people. We were volunteers for the Elang’ata Agrovet project. Beyond the (limited) help we provided, it was very interesting to follow the veterinarian in his interventions on the chickens, rabbits, cows, dogs in the area because we were able to meet many Tanzanians, see their homes, how they lived… It also allowed us to see other projects on improving living conditions in the country’s countryside using simple and pragmatic means. On the other hand, in the Viva Tanzania hostel, we were able to meet other volunteers working on other projects in schools, hospitals… And we were able to share our experiences together to have a better understanding of life in Tanzania. It was really a very good experience and an excellent way to discover Tanzania.”
Mbwa Wa Africa
The Mbwa Wa Africa shelter in Arusha provides vital care for injured, abused, and neglected dogs and cats. Founded in 2013, the shelter is home to around 80 dogs and 30 cats, including animals with special needs due to accidents or abuse. Volunteers play a critical role in caring for these animals by assisting with daily tasks such as walking, washing, and training, as well as helping with adoptions and fundraising efforts. This animal shelter volunteer program is open to anyone who loves animals and wants to make a lasting impact on animal welfare in Tanzania.
Elang'ata Agrovet
The Elang’ata Agrovet program, founded by veterinarian Dr. Everest Maguo, empowers local farmers and communities by promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation in Tanzania. Volunteers support diverse projects, from tree planting and crop treatment to visiting schools and training farmers on eco-friendly practices. This conservation volunteer program is ideal for those passionate about environmental conservation, animal care, and agriculture, making a meaningful difference in community development. “I stayed at Viva Tanzania’s Hostel for four weeks. Tizia welcomed me very heartfully and I directly felt home. I did my volunteer at Mbwa wa Africa which is an animal shelter at the outskirts of Arusha National Park. It was sad to see how people treat the street dogs but great how happy they are in their new life full of hope. Tizia organized my volunteering project well so that there were no problems. She also showed me the way to the shelter so that I felt safe when going there on my own. I am glad to have met all these nice people at the hostel and we all share beautiful moments. When there were any questions, I just asked Tizia and she arranged everything. Tanzania was a great experience I will remember my whole life and its sad that the time here is over now. I can totally recommend Viva Tanzania if you want to learn about Tanzania. It was also nice partying with Tizia and the other guests. Asante Sana!”
