Ayubu Kazana, born in Tanzania, founded Shadow of Success for Street Youth of Arusha in 2013. Ayubu’s parents unfortunately died when he was a child and he had to grow up without them. He received his primary education in Kenya and went to secondary school in Tanzania. He currently works as a medical representative and his goal is to support children and youth in need. The German association Hilfe für Afrika Hilden e.V. (“Help for Africa”), under Engelbert Kremers, supports the young adults by offering health insurance, land to rent, an office and donated sewing machines. Currently, there are two projects you can be a part of. The “Shadow of Success Street Youth Farming Project” and the “Shadow of Success Women Empowerment Project”.
You can opt to choose one of the Shadow of Success projects, or you can switch between the two. As general tasks, creating a website and fundraising will be essential parts of your work. There are currently around ten male teenagers and young adults participating in the farming project and sadly, these men come from difficult backgrounds like homelessness, day labour or addictions. There is one farming assistant who supervises them across the three acres where they grow beans, cucumbers, green peppers and saroo, a local vegetable. If you’re interested in helping with the farming process, you can help plant, maintain, harvest and sell the vegetables. You can also organize afternoon activities like football games and engage in teaching English and life skills. Every weekend, the young adults must report about the progress of the work, so it can be your job to organise these meetings. In the women’s empowerment project, there are about seven young women training to become tailors. These women also come from troubled backgrounds including homelessness, prostitution and various addictions. There is currently one tailor supervising the young women and at the moment there are three sewing machines. One of the women is also currently attending school and is about to complete her secondary education. Your help will be needed teaching the girls to sew and assisting in tailoring, teaching them English and computer skills as well as getting engaged in product development, creating new designs and any marketing they may need. Depending on which project you want to work in, it could be helpful if you have a background or interest in agriculture, sewing, product development, design, marketing, teaching and/or fundraising. It is also important to remember that the young adults that form Shadow of Success come from various backgrounds. Please be sensitive, respectful and open minded.
